04 / 10 / 2024

The 9th FOREST EUROPE Ministerial Conference held on October 1 and 2 in Bonn (Germany) was attended by the Union of South European Foresters (USSE) as an observer organization of this high-level voluntary pan-European process.

At its conclusion, about 30 ministers responsible for forest affairs in Europe signed the “Bonn Ministerial Declaration: FOREST EUROPE - Keeping the concept of Sustainable Forest Management fit for the future” and the “Bonn Ministerial Decision: Sustainable Forest Management as a tool to increase forest resilience” with the support of more than 20 observer organizations, including USSE.

Leire Salaberria, managing director of USSE, has defended during her speech at the conference the role of sustainable forest management as a tool to maintain resilient forests that can better adapt to climate change and are able to continue providing services such as carbon sequestration, substitution of fossil products or the promotion of biodiversity, among others.

Also, regarding to the Bonn Ministerial Decision, the USSE welcomed the decision of the ministers to create a coordinated pan-European mechanism for forest risks that aims to strengthen international and transboundary cooperation on forest management, adaptation and resilience, as well as to stimulate the exchange of knowledge and information on policy, science and practice.
