Seminar on "Preparing for the implementation of the EU Regulation on Deforestation and Forest Degradation (EUDR)"

On September 6, USSE attended a seminar co-organized by CEPF and COPA COGECA in Brussels on the preparation of the implementation of the EU Regulation on deforestation and forest degradation (EUDR). 

The event was attended by two representatives of the European Commission's Directorate General for Agriculture who explained the new EUDR requirements and what foresters and farmers must do to comply with them. 

The day included presentations by spokespersons from forest owners, the European paper and timber industry, livestock and arable farmers, as well as European livestock and meat traders. All of them explained to the Commission representatives the difficulties and concerns that the application of this new regulation is causing for each of these groups. 

Doubts about the application of the regulation

Throughout the meeting, numerous practical questions were raised regarding the application of this regulation before a Commission that sometimes did not know how to respond clearly to the doubts that were raised.

For the USSE, "it should be noted that the text of the regulation still leaves much room for interpretation and raises serious doubts about its correct and proper application. That is why the Commission should develop, together with interested parties, clear and practical guidance documents that provide legal certainty for operators to comply with the new requirements. We expect to see progress in this regard in the coming months".
