International meeting on carbon sequestration, its stakes and opportunities on April 10 in Bordeaux

The USSE, the Association Carbone Climat Environnement Nouvelle-Aquitaine (ACCLENA) and its French partners of the Syndicat des Sylviculteurs du Sud-Ouest will organize next April 10 the event "Carbon sequestration: challenges and opportunities" in the plenary hall of the Regional Council of New Aquitaine in Bordeaux.

In the 2015 Paris Agreement, the United Nations set the objective of limiting global warming to 2°C by 2100 and implementing all possible efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C. In order to achieve the more ambitious goal, the models call for the planet to be carbon neutral by 2050. In other words, humans should contribute no more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere than they can eliminate.

In this context, carbon is omnipresent in many regional, national and European debates, strategies and policies, and is a major challenge facing our planet.

In this regard, forests have been identified as important carbon sinks, as they have a great potential to remove CO2 from the atmosphere thus reducing the concentration of one of the most important gases in the greenhouse effect and therefore their role in the fight against the climate crisis is key.

The aim of this conference is, on the one hand, to know the legislation at European level on carbon removal certification, which affects both the agricultural and forestry sectors, and to know what are the challenges of each sector in relation to the new carbon sequestration markets and certification methods that are being created.On the other hand, to show the opportunities and challenges that the development of these markets and certification methods present for landowners and other operators, and to present practical experiences of exemplary carbon markets that are already being applied in different regions and/or European countries.

Likewise, in the round tables that will be held both in the morning and afternoon sessions, there will be a dynamic reflection and constructive debates on this relevant subject.
